Why Lichess will always be free.

@C4LWangA I hope the site continues to grow, too. I think this place is very special and unique, and what thibault and his team have accomplished is extraordinary. They deserve every success and accolade.

I suppose I should have worded my statement clearer that while I hope the site continues to grow, I hope it does so in a sustainable manner. If, for example, the sun rises and all of a sudden lichess has 100x the users it currently I think that'd be pretty disastrous. I don't think the site would have the capacity to serve that many users, and I don't know how easy it would be to scale-up.

But, again, these are idle thoughts, more of a thought experiment than anything else. Let me reiterate my deep admiration and best wishes for the team at lichess.

Frankly, I hope it lasts for another ten years and more because it is rare to have such a valuable and precious commodity given away freely, without any expectation or burden placed on the user.
Props to Lichess. Greed has ruined the world and our way of life.
While lichess maybe free, the better websites for chess (like chess.com) charge money, but in return you get much better chess experience.
Lichess is the best website I have ever seen, and I hope this continues. I am proud to have once been a patron.
Even better because its free. great job!
>In conclusion, the answer to the question "why is Lichess free?" is very simple. Why wouldn’t it be? Our only goal is to have the best website possible. To that end, adding ads, paywalls, or trackers would make no sense.
