Why Lichess will always be free.

@C4LWangA I hope but I doubt that. There are 4.66B internet users total, so 1/4 to 1/5 of the users have to make a lichess account. Not to mention some accounts aren't even used.
@C4LWangA Let's be careful what we wish for. I don't know the tech side of things, 1B users sounds insanely expensive. Do the number of servers required scale linearly with the number of users? I would tend to think not.

I imagine there has to be some point where it's very difficult to maintain a donation-only model. Unless maybe we can get Bill Gates to be lichess' secret Santa and get him to donate a whole bunch of servers (and a small solar farm to provide free electricity to power them all!)

Edit: I just remembered that France has nuclear power and exports a lot of energy to Spain and the surrounding countries. Electricity costs are probably pretty cheap over there, so we might not need to worry about power costs nearly as much.
