You are probably behind a proxy that doesn't support websockets. Sorry, I can't do anything about it.
Or.... you have disabled websockets support in firefox in someway. If you see the "Your browser cannot run Lichess!" message, then that's probably the case. Look into firefox about:config page.

I updated it after seeing that message. I'm also on a public libraries wifi.
about:config says I might screw something up if I don't know what I'm doing, which I don't so I'm not comfortable fiddling with stuff there.

Yea, it says my browser doesn't support websockets.
Everything says they disabled it because of security issues so I probably shouldn't.
The security issues have been resolved for quite a while now. They were resolved in version seven, and the current release is version fifteen.
However, if you still are hesitant to use firefox, then you can try chrome, which has websockets enabled by default.
